Volunteer Adviers

Being a VA is an extremely rewarding experience which offers the fantastic opportunity to work alongside lawyers from leading US and Magic Circle firms. Horizon also holds social events throughout the year for its VA’s which helps create a strong sense of community spirit. 

The responsibilities of a VA and skills they must possess are set out below:

Responsibilities

1. Conduct interviews with clients and produce an accompanying attendance note
2. Draft claim forms, mandatory reconsideration letters, appeal forms and tribunal submissions on behalf of clients
3. Attend tribunal hearings alongside clients
4. Liaise with clinic coordinators as and when queries arise, to ensure high standards of client service

Skills/attributes

1. Law graduate or undergraduate undertaking legal studies (including the GDL)
2. Enthusiastic about supporting those in need with their legal matters
3. Strong interpersonal skills
4. Team player
5. Ability to meet tight deadlines
6. Demonstrable commitment to provision of pro bono legal assistance to members of the local community
