The work we do is made possible by the support and contribution of our Volunteer Advisers (VA’s) who are at the heart of the client-centric service we provide. Our VA’s are usually either law graduates or undergraduates undertaking their legal studies (including the GDL). As such, we provide our VA’s with the necessary training on the PIP and ESA welfare benefits, as well as access to various legal resources.

Volunteering at Horizon has given me unparalleled experience at such an early stage of my career. I’ve not only gained a greater insight into the operation of our welfare system, but also have developed both my professional and legal skills. I’ve been lucky enough to work with lawyers from well-rounded firms and have direct client contact. Most importantly, at Horizon I’ve always had a supportive network around me.

As a VA at Horizon, I have handled my own clients with the assistance of a Solicitor. With frequent face to face interactions and correspondence with clients, I have developed my communications skills. Horizon enabled me to contribute at a range of stages including making applications, submitting appeals and attending trials. Little effort can go a long way and the personal gratification gained from volunteering at Horizon is guaranteed.
Horizon LAC has been an extremely useful experience so far. The initial client interview enabled me to develop my communication skills and gave me confidence to extract important information in a sensitive manner. Typing up the attendance note and corresponding with the client also helped me to strengthen skills that are necessary for a legal career. Throughout the process, I have been given real responsibility which has helped make this experience so rewarding, as the work that is being done has a tangible impact on people’s lives. I look forward to seeing the case through to its conclusion and potentially challenging the decision if necessary.

Working with Horizon Legal Advice clinic has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Its been so refreshing to be involved in such valuable work. I’ve obtained legal skills which have helped me move forward in my career as well as, feel like I’m making a real difference to people’s lives. Ultimately, a lot of lawyers go into the field to help people but are seldom given the opportunity. Through Horizon I’ve been lucky enough to be given that opportunity, and I hope to continue working with them in the future.
